Former England captain Joe Root said he has enjoyed playing under Ben Stokes’s Test captaincy in the English summer where the senior national team overturned a poor run of form to become potential world beaters in the longest format of the game. Root said Stokes has continued to be an impact player for England even after taking over the burden of responsibility as captain.
England were struggling to crack the Test code despite having become one of the finest white-ball side in world cricket. Before Joe Root stepped down earlier this year, England had won only 2 Tests in a 17-match phase. After England lost the Ashes and lost to the West Indies in West Indies, wholesale changes were made to the leadership group and coaching staff as Stokes replaced Root as captain and Chris Silverwood was sacked from the role.
Ever since Stokes joined hands with Silverwood’s successor, Brendon McCullum, England have played a refreshingly aggressive brand of cricket that has helped them produce the right results. Adopting the much-talked-about ‘Bazball’ approach, England have clean swept defending Test champions New Zealand 3-0, beaten India in a rescheduled Test and beaten South Africa 2-1 at home.
“It’s been incredible, great fun to be a part of, great fun to play the style of cricket we have, and to get back to winning ways as well,” Root told Sky Sports after England’s 9-wicket win in the London Test against South Africa on Monday.
Root said the atmosphere in the dressing room has been calm and Stokes has stood out with his clear messaging as the Test captain in the new set-up.
“I am absolutely thrilled for him [Stokes], He has been awesome. He’s galvanized the team really well, been really clear with his messaging. He leads by example on the field,” Root added.
Stokes has begun his full-time stint as Test captain with an impressive record and Root said the all-rounder has eased into the tough role.
“He’s led in every way possible this summer. It’s been a real joy to watch him take to that position like a duck to water,” Root added.
