KC Venugopal meets Sonia Gandhi: Congress General Secretary of AICC KC Venugopal today met party interim president Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath residence in Delhi. It is being told that the election of the Congress President and the issues of the party were on the agenda of this meeting. These days Venugopal is involved in the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra with Rahul Gandhi and is doing a padyatra. On receiving the call, he went straight to the 10 Janpath of Delhi.
It is being told that competition can be seen among many leaders for the post of Congress President. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot are being seen among the possible candidates for the post of the party’s president. Gehlot, however, has refused to contest the elections.
Will Shashi Tharoor contest the election of Congress President?
Shashi Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi at her residence yesterday. According to sources, Tharoor expressed her desire to contest elections to Sonia, to which Sonia has said that everyone is free to contest the elections. Apart from Tharoor, many other leaders also met Sonia Gandhi yesterday.
MP Deepender Hooda, boxer Vijender, new Congress in-charge of Madhya Pradesh JP Agrawal and Jharkhand Congress in-charge Avinash Pandey had come to meet him at the interim president’s residence.
According to sources, Sonia Gandhi has welcomed the idea of more people contesting the elections and has rejected the notion of an ‘official candidate’.
Ashok Gehlot’s opinion on Rahul Gandhi
Ashok Gehlot has denied his candidature, saying that he will try to persuade Rahul Gandhi to contest the elections. Many leaders within the party are demanding to make Rahul Gandhi the president. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress have passed resolutions demanding to make Rahul the president.
The notification for the election of the Congress President will be issued on September 22 and the process of filing nominations will go on from September 24 to 30. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8. In case of more than one candidate, the election will be held on October 17 and the results will be declared on October 19.
