These officials oversee organizations that regularly engage in violence to suppress peaceful protesters and members of Iranian civil society, political dissidents, women’s rights activists and members of the Iranian Bahá’í community, the Treasury said in a news release.

The Iranian police had detained Mahsa Amini when she went to visit Tehran with her family. She was arrested and assaulted for not wearing a hijab. Amini died three days after being taken into custody. Police say Miss Amini died of a heart attack and deny that she was abused.
